“Men and Women of Australia (to borrow a phrase from our youth),
I’m doing a one-man show to raise money for the old club. I will be reading a set piece which I am writing especially for the occasion. Have I done anything like this before? Yes. At the Port Fairy folk festival. But possibly my greatest performance was on behalf of the Monash University Irish Club which drew an audience of one. Then there was the prison in New South Wales where I was pushed into a room with one bloke who was out of his head on drugs and laughed hysterically every time I spoke and a voice on the intercom in the ceiling saying, “Testing, Testing, 1-2-3”, and three hard men up the back who looked like they had recently committed an armed robbery. That was my most courageous monologue. I don’t know how but I got as far as talking about CLR James’s “Beyond A Boundary”, one of the great sports books of the 20th century which hardly anyone in Australia has read, and one of the hard men up the back went, “Read it!”. I ended up getting a guided tour of the prison by the hard men with my attention being directed to art works by the inmates.
So that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to talk for one hour with a break in the middle for old men (people) to relieve their bladders and hopefully get another drink. You’re going to pay $25.
All proceeds to the club. Date: Friday June 14, the night before Uni plays Hutchins for the Southee-Palfreyman Cup at Uni. Please tell showbiz entrepreneur Harry M. Polegaj through the ticket link .
